  • iPad - a review from 5 days in

My iPad landed on Sunday 11 April and it has been my constant companion since then. Even non-tech people have probably read 2 or 3 iPad review articles by now so I will try to be brief on the items mentioned by many others. However, here are my top-line pros and cons:

Lighting

If you are renovating your home now you really need intelligent lighting control or face a difficult future controlling tomorrow's energy efficient light types. We live in an age of increasing energy consciousness - which is good. But some of the side effects aren't so positive: the EU has mandated that the old fashioned filament bulb is phased out and the alternatives (LEDs, halogen, flourescent) are not nearly so simple to dim. Gone are the rotary dimmers on your walls.

In the same way as rewiring one's house for data is now critical to being able to take advantage of future technological advances (don't believe the hype on wireless - our hefty brick and stone construction will make it problematic for years) the same is true of integrating proper lighting systems from the likes of Lutron and Dynalite. This will allow you the best control of today & tomorrow's new bulb types as well as giving you a host of user-friendly features like having an automatic "all-off" button so that when you go out to dinner you know that there are no bulbs left burning.

Or you may want timed lights for burglar deterrents, or to have us programme a dim light pathway for night-time bathroom visits or indeed any number of "moods" - it's all possible with a lighting system and over the years it will pay for itself in energy efficiency.
